Top 5 Mango Sticky Rice Spots in Bangkok that ACTUALLY Do the Dessert Justice

  • Affordability - Firstly, we checked if the prices they offered were affordable.
  • Mango sticky rice - Of course, we also had to grade the mango sticky rice itself.
  • Place - We also observed if the stall/restaurant itself was clean, offered comfortable waiting/seating premises and featured a great atmosphere.
  • Service - We took a look at how their service works to see how friendly the staff were and how quick they were to cater to our needs.
  • Accessibility - Lastly, we checked if the place featured accessible locations and operating hours.

Recently, a friend of mine flew to Bangkok for a short vacation and they wanted me to be their personal tour guide to which I happily obliged. Knowing that he’s quite the foodie, I immediately thought of letting him try Bangkok’s famous mango sticky rice since it’s my favourite dessert too.

There was one problem though: there were hundreds of places that offered it! I didn’t know which one offered the best version that would REALLY give my friend the perfect taste and feel of the dish.

This led me to go on a wild hunt, stopping by various spots across the city that offered mango sticky rice. This led me to discover five spots, and I’m going to share them with you!

Of course, the first place I checked out was Kor Panich, which is pretty well-known in Bangkok for two reasons. Firstly, it’s been around for over 90 years, so I felt that if there’s anyone who’s nailed this recipe down to a tee, it would be them.

Aside from its longevity, the store also reached legendary status when it was listed in the Michelin Bib Gourmand Bangkok, which is a rating system that’s esteemed as it comes.

This spot has always been famous because of the quality of its sticky rice desserts, more specifically, its mango sticky rice. Not much can be said about it other than it’s well-made, from the warmness of the sticky rice to the ripeness of the mangoes, everything is perfect.

As for its downsides, we can only name two. Firstly, as much as we love its authentic and old-timey feel, we felt that the small store doesn’t do a great job providing comfort for its customers, especially those who are waiting for a table to free up.

Furthermore, it’s no secret that the price they offer for their mango sticky rice is relatively higher compared to other stalls, so we can see this being a red flag for other customers. Then again, you are getting the best value for your money, so if you can look past that, this is a must-visit!

Pros

  • Great location
  • Over 90 years of serving mango sticky rice
  • Listed in Michelin Bib Gourmand Bangkok

Cons

  • Slightly expensive pricing
  • Subpar facilities for waiting customers

Michelin bib indeed

“Yes. So good. Michelin bib indeed. Warm sticky rice with perfectly ripe mangos and a great ratio of crunch. Ask them to sit across the street as it gets very hot. Really really good. They deserve all 125 of my baht. Shared 1 with 2 people and it was a good ratio.”

A must-try dessert spot!

“Whenever I’m in the area, I can’t resist stopping here for mango with sticky rice—it’s a favourite treat! Just a heads-up, seating is limited to a few chairs and no tables. Most opt for takeaway. Despite that, the delicious flavours make it worth the visit every time. A must-try dessert spot!”

Boonsap Thai Desserts is another name that I was familiar with prior to this list because it’s a well-known spot to grab some Thai sweets, more specifically mango sticky rice. It’s a good thing that we took a closer look though, as we were treated to a delicious version of this sweet!

Right off the bat, I immediately noticed that their coconut milk is slightly thicker compared to what we’ve tried in the past and we must say, it’s a welcome change! We also like the fact that it wasn’t too sweet so plus points for that.

Location-wise, you won’t be disappointed too! It sits along a famous road, where you’ll also find a bunch of hidden restaurants and cafes you can check out before heading to the dessert shop and finishing your meal with some good old mango sticky rice.

If we were to nitpick something we didn’t like, however, it would be the overall ambience of the place. Personally, it felt a bit too bland to our liking and we found it a bit too small, which eliminates the possibility of giving those in the queue a comfy place to stay in.

Overall, we still think Boonsap Thai Desserts is a spot worthy of your attention, with its cheap but high-quality local sweets. Furthermore, their mango sticky rice is masterfully made so you’ll know that you’ll be getting the best bang for your buck deal.

Pros

  • Offers a wide array of Thai desserts
  • Unique version of mango sticky rice
  • Great value for money

Cons

  • Small space for dine-in guests
  • Subpar ambience

Fresh and delicious mango

“Very yummy mango sticky rice. Also selling a lot variety of other sweets and desserts. Very few seats inside only 3-4 small tables with 2-3 seats each. Fresh and delicious mango, drop by here for dessert after having famous pork knuckle rice further down the road and roast duck noodles opposite, so ordered the small portion which was more than enough for two people. The price was reasonable. Tried to order extra for takeaway for later afternoon going to the airport but the staff was super kind to tell us it would not be fresh anymore after 3-4 hours. 5 star you get. Thanks.”

This is a must-visit!

“They have a wide variety of desserts. A must-try is their mango sticky rice (I forgot to take pictures of it; the next thing I know we ate it all already). Another one is their custard, which is delicious, smooth, creamy and not too sweet. I also like their green rice cake. It’s a bit chewy with the right amount of sweetness. Please do visit this shop early, their products do sell out fast. On my last day in Bangkok, I decided to buy some desserts to take with me back to my country, only to find out that the store had closed already ahead of closing time. If you are in Bangrak, this is a must-visit.”

Situated in the heart of Bangkok, you’ll immediately see Mae Varee Mango Sticky Rice because it has long queues most of the day. I’ve been seeing this store for the longest time and have been wondering what all the hype is about.

After trying it first-hand, it’s safe to say that the hype is real! The best way to describe their mango sticky rice is that it’s by the book.

For starters, the coconut milk they use is super rich and creamy, which adds so much flavour to the sticky rice and of course, the mangoes. Speaking of mangoes, we also appreciate how perfectly ripe they are, as they provide a specific kind of sweetness that lingers in the mouth.

We don’t know if it’s a placebo effect caused by our love for this dish, but we can already tell how good their mangoes are just by looking at them because they’re golden! They’re notably meaty compared to the ones we saw in other stalls that serve this dish.

One of the things that we don’t like about this place, however, is their higher price range. We do understand that you’ll get your money’s worth but there’s a side of us that thinks that it takes advantage of tourists.

We also want to give a heads-up about the crowd because this place is almost always packed. Although it’s a good problem on their side, I could see this rubbing some customers the wrong way, especially considering that they have little to no waiting space.

Pros

  • Rich and creamy mango sticky rice
  • Fresh ingredients
  • Located in the heart of Bangkok

Cons

  • Long queue with no comfortable space to stay in
  • “Tourist” price

Still one of the best in Bangkok

“Worth the wait? As usual, quite a long queue at Mae Varee (depending on when you swing by) only made longer now that you can order from several online channels.

However, their sticky rice with coconut milk is still one of the best in Bangkok, as it remains rich and creamy and goes very well with the sweet golden mangoes that are currently in season.

For reference, mango season usually coincides with Thailand’s hot season, March through May. But luckily for us Mango-lovers, advancements in agriculture now allow for Mangoes to be grown all year around”

Will certainly come back again

“I was told that this is one of the best mango sticky rice in Bangkok.  They did not disappoint.

The glutinous rice is fresh. And when you pour the warm coconut milk over it, the combination is really delicious.

Needless to say, the mango was meaty and sweet.  I will certainly come back again.”

Chef Ple Thai Mango Sticky Rice is the quintessential no-frills stall that you’ll find many of across Bangkok. Personally, I think that it’s the most authentic way of eating this dish, as it’s where most locals get it.

Apart from its appearance, one of the things that immediately caught our attention was the impressive display of all their fresh mangoes. We can say that they’re fresh since they’re perfectly golden and ripe to the touch.

You can even see the person in the stall getting a mango off the display and using it to create a bowl of their famous mango sticky rice. Their version of this dish is quite simple as well and we see nothing wrong with that!

What sets them apart from others, however, is their massive mangoes! A single serving of this dish is more than enough for two people, which is such a great steal considering how cheap it is.

The only thing we wished they could improve is the stall’s state. We respect and love its no-frills appearance, but we do think that they could update their look to make the overall place feel more enticing and hygienic.

It’s not an issue for us since we’re used to this kind of environment, but we could see it being a major dealbreaker for some visitors.

Pros

  • Large servings
  • Fresh mangoes
  • Reasonable price range

Cons

  • Small space
  • Could use some hygiene improvements

Mind-boggling

“As a mango enthusiast, I definitely wanted to visit this place and it did not disappoint. The mango smoothie was a well-earned reward after walking to and from Emporium Mall. The mango sticky rice still amazes me. The combination of rice, coconut milk and a delicious mango was mind-boggling.

Highly recommend visiting this place and trying the variety of mango options. They also have dried mangoes and pineapples, which I got a few packets of to take back home.”

Amazing mango sticky rice

“My friend recommended this place – turns out, for 3 consecutive nights, I ordered their mango sticky rice via grab and this became my dessert at night. For the 4th time, I went down directly to this place to self-collect the sticky rice I ordered because I really wanted to see who was making this amazing mango sticky rice.

It’s best to order and get it delivered to your hotel room as the place has no place to sit and dine.”

Pa Lek-Pa Yai is a stall that’s been around for more than 80 years, so we would be lying if we said that we hadn’t heard of it prior to this list. We don’t give in to any sort of hype so naturally, we had to take a closer look, and boy am I glad we did.

One of the things that immediately caught our eye was how beautiful the presentation of their mango sticky rice was. They’re served in transparent tubs and each ingredient is separated into its own section, giving the customer the chance to mix the dish how they want it.

Speaking of ingredients, we could tell just by looking that everything they used was of high quality, from the coconut milk down to the sticky rice. A lot of people (us included) have also noticed how good their sticky rice was, as it wasn’t too wet or grainy.

This, plus the addition of warm coconut milk was a match made in heaven, and we couldn’t get enough of it!

As for the things they could improve, the most glaring problem we noticed was their slow service. We understand that they cater to tons of customers per day, but we think they could create a better queueing system that won’t turn off potential customers.

Furthermore, we noticed that the quality of their mangoes was inconsistent in terms of ripeness. Some featured the right amount of sweetness while others were too sour to the point where they didn’t blend well with the other flavours of the dish.

Pros

  • Generous servings
  • Perfect sticky rice
  • Has been serving mango sticky rice for 80+ years

Cons

  • Slow service
  • Inconsistent quality of mangoes

Sweetest mangoes in Bangkok

“This deceivingly simple plate of mangos and sweet coconut rice topped with more coconut cream and mung beans is known for the best sticky rice and the sweetest mangoes in Bangkok.

If you want to have mango sticky rice in Bangkok, be sure to make a visit here!”

The best mango sticky rice in Bangkok

“I think I have found the best mango sticky rice in Bangkok. This shop only opens 4 months in one year (around Feb to May). It has a special crispy anchovy topping. But the hero is really the sticky rice, so soft, creamy, yet firm to the bite. Only take away, but has one makeshift table if you want to eat on the spot.”
